Thoughts on Tech

Inspiring the next generation of techies

Over the last few weeks on what seems like hundreds of conference calls I’ve had heard plenty of stories of the challenges of jungling work and family life, especially with little kids running around. Having recently having become a father myself, it has made me think about the challenges that the next generations will have and how technology will solve those problems. But the pressing question has been how us, as parents and ‘oldies’, inspire the younger generations into using technology to improve our health, planet and other pressing issues.

Life as a Chief Technology Officer

Given its often impossible (even within the same team) to understand the challenges of colleagues in different roles, so I thought it’d be a good idea to ask ex-collegues and aquaintenaces to do some digging! This is the first of these series, where I get the views of various members of IT departments across the UK, to understand their roles, their challenges, adapting to the changing technology landscape and the difficult times affecting their times as the pandemic affects all businesses. The first of these is with Dan Pass, CTO of 1st Stop Group, a well-established finance firm based out of Blackpool, UK.

Life as a Chief Information Security Officer

This is the third and final one of these series (1st one is HERE, 2nd one is HERE), where I get the views of various IT profressionals across the UK, to understand their roles, their challenges, adapting to the changing technology landscape and the difficult challenges with the ongoing pandemic . This time its a chat with Howard Pritchard, Co-Founder of AVORD and a man with over 10+ years of being a CISO.

Oktane 2020. Okta’s virtual annual conference

Not one I’d originally been able to attend, but a bonus side-effect of the coronavirus isolation is that events such as these, are forced to cater for remote attendees, which is exactly what I am! Okta if you’re not aware, is the leader in Identity-as-a-service, so to you and me (techies, not sales folk) is that it is a service giving you SAML, OAUTH, etc (single sign on) to web apps, as well as a centralised directory that can be a huge differentiator in this new cloud-centric world. I’m keen to see what the new major announcements are, that I can utilise within Stagecoach (my employer) to improve the user experience or security.

Enabling Microsoft Teams en-masse for your Business

With the WFH being the most used acronym on the Internet over the past few weeks, and challenges a lot of IT departments are facing, I thought it would be useful to explain for the Office 365 users amongst us how to enable Microsoft Teams for all your users and create those teams quickly whilst ensuring it’s done in a controlled manner.

Just to call it out here, but the scripts here aren’t my work, and I’ll link to where I found the golden nugget of information.

Security. Eggs in one basket, or a multi-vendor, layered approach?

Having recently engaged with a number of large vendors around our end-user compute estate, it made me think about the pros and cons of using a vendor full security stack as opposed to buying ‘best of breed’ from a variety of vendors. Obviously there is the stategy of security the data, forget about the endpoint, but for certain industries, this isn’t always the best fit.

Coronavirus IT Checklist

With most businesses sending their staff home, I thought I’d put up a very quick post to share a few thoughts, and ideas for smaller departments or those without a Coronavirus Task Force. I’m happy to keep this up to date with any suggestions from you LinkedIn or Twitter folk for anything that I’ve missed, so throw me some suggestions! I’m going to include a few companies that have reached out to me over the past couple of weeks with useful free trials of their software which could be helpful.

Public Speaking Experience

I’ve been fortunate over the past 18 months to speak at a variety of events, from on-stage at VMWorld, to talking to CxO level at a Chief Wine Officer event to presenting in front of Stagecoach‘s very own Senior Leadership team. Each event had its challenges; different formats, different topics, and different audiences but all of them were very rewarding.
